Why Does My Dog Drag His Back End

The slow revival of "Lozzole"

November 14 - ascent to the ancient village of Lozzole.
Close to a fifth of the watershed between the valley of the Lamone and Senio, stands the village of Lozzole. The great church dedicated to St. Bartholomew was built in 1782, perhaps on an earlier structure, rising towards the sky showing all his religiosity.
To reach the place: from Faenza, follow the signs for Bristol. First the center of the valley which is reached after 12 km. Typical Renaissance Village at the foot of the chalky hills, which are shown: the tower clock, the Venetian castle and the church of Monticino. Further along, various villages including Fognano, S. Cassiano, people, to reach then Marradi. After passing the town follow the signs, glue-Casaglia Florence.
Continue for several miles, to be precise until shortly after crossing the underpass of the train and in view of the Village of Fantino.
You can park your car on the right, at the very beginning of the path n.529 to Lozzole. (M.441)

Now you put your feet on a trail well-preserved. The old mule track to Lozzole and Capergozzole.

Lozzole The ascent is quiet and steady. After passing a ruin of a house,

leads to 'Az Agricola Praticino

Nearby is a small tree Euonymus europaeus Berretta commonly called a priest. Wood white, hard and compact, this tree was used, a time for making spindles for spinning wool, raw, and turn it into yarn. From this use of drift wood, probably the common name of "spindle-tree" which is sometimes referred to this plant. For most dell'annola biretta is an inconspicuous shrub, but in autumn declares its identity with a display of leaves and dark red or red-pink fruit with four lobes, which, when mature, open revealing the seeds of a bright orange, quite unusual. Because of this display of autumn, this plant is grown in gardens and parks as an ornamental, and it has taken some varieties were very attractive. Particolarment grows well on basic soils. The tree gives off an unpleasant odor when bruised and fruit is emetic. They were used by rural people as a drastic purgative; use is not without dangers, because of their venom. In ancient times, leaves and seeds, powders, were sprayed on the skin of children and animals to expel the bidocchi (Readers Digest - trees and shrubs).
He meets a new house with no name on the card. Some walls are still standing thanks to the support of clematis (m. 578 - 00:32 hours)

Despite sky is covered, trees, shyly, donate their autumn colors.

The encounter with these little majesty
moves and gives peace of mind.
Although in places so remote there is always a flower.

Even today you can see along the "mule", ancient ways of connection between the valleys, where the man drew precious water sources both for itself and for watering the bestiame.Questa source with two fountains that we see now overrun with ivy and other weeds, waiting much was kept clean and well cared for and there flowed water clear and fresh. (616 m - 11.00)

climb, the forest thins out and leave some windows spartiaque glimpse of the ridge between the Senio and Lamone, a place where we're headed and where to find the ancient village of Lozzole.
little further we find the eighteenth-century house called "Stabbia. Federico Cardinal Cattani was born in Marradi in 1865 and died in 1943. His family home was the Villa Stabbia, which is between Fantino and Lozzole. His residence was cardinal in Rome, but sometimes he came Stabbia and certainly will sometimes come into the church Lozzole, which is in the nearby ridge. Here was a baby Jesus, plaster cloth, which is probably old enough (648 m - 11.21 hours). For the full article click here

This emblem is on the facade of Villa Stabbia, perhaps belongs to the family Cattani.
(We are informed)

Detail of the portal

Stabbia had, like most of the manor houses of the period, its chapel private. Not for long, this beautiful chapel, we see still standing, the roof collapsed and the niche where the Virgin Mary to the present is ground
All this causes a lot of sadness.
The subsequent cases that meet are not put in better condition. After about a hundred yards on the right is another big house "Fake Death" with a big yard and a large block of sandstone as the main door lintel. How much effort will be made to accommodate this large boulder?

Carry slightly uphill, and soon after, a glimpse of the ancient village of Lozzole.

But the houses are not finished. On a beautiful plateau close to the village of Lozzole, there's just one house, even without a name on this paper.
If you look towards the village, we see beautiful horses grazing.

The bell tower of the church of Lozzole.

IL Borgo, arriving there at least on this side, not just the appearance of the medieval village, but a lonely place that is falling apart. So do not and reaching the opposite side, where the large church is now restored.
(793 m - ore 12.04).

As I said, this is what you see when you arrive. This was once a bathroom.

church dedicated to St. Bartholomew.

Some details inside the church

The small effort to reach this place, is amply rewarded, not only the sights that you can see here on the two valleys, but also and above all, to note the slow renewal of the Village. For now only the church has been restored but there is a will to recover even part of the Village.
