April 17 - Excursion to the "Garibaldi Trail"
CAI Ravenna - Faenza UOEI So, we, we decided to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Unification of Italy.
On April 17, 2011 - We are going to take a stretch of the route that you did go to Don Giovanni Garibaldi Truth and Light Captain in that famous night between 22 and 23 August 1849; to people (Marradi) Palazzuolo to the Senio.
Among the historical events that have affected these places the Tuscan-Romagna there was the passage of General Giuseppe Garibaldi and Captain Light, accompanied by Don Juan Truth, Papal searched by guards and the Grand Duchy. The year was 1849, July 2, the active struggle for the defense of Rome had virtually ceased. Garibaldi took note of the defeat, he turned to those who had followed until then, saying, "The fortune smile on us today betrayed us tomorrow. I go out from Rome, who wants to continue the war against the alien to come with me. I do not offer neither pay, nor quarters, nor provisions. I offer hunger, thirst, forced marches, battles and death, who has the name of Italy not only on the lips, but in the heart, follow me. " With about four men went out from Rome to Venice with the intention to bring help to the city and make it resist the attack Austria. So, marching through the Lazio, Umbria and the Marche, came to St. Marino, where, as we know, it melted the legion. With a small number of men and with his wife Anita, ill, on the evening of August 1, swooped in Cesenatico. With difficulty he could make out the "bragozzi" from the harbor of Cesenatico, but was discovered by the Austrian Navy: Eight bragozzi were captured, five managed to escape, but given the impossibility of escape Arena Garibaldi did bragozzi 8 km north of "Magnavacca" (Now Porto Garibaldi). Thus began the so-called "die", that the bailout plan and the network of clandestine rescue took place between 3 and 27 August 1849. On 4 August at 19.30 Anita died at the farm "Guiccioli" on Mandriole. Gen., torn by grief, but did not want to leave that bedside Captain Light convinced him. Thus began the adventure flight through the valley and the Apennines was to bring them to the port of Genoa. Long, adventurous and was suffered to escape. It took 22 days to reach the Monte Trebbio (between Dovadola and Modigliana), where they waited for Don Giovanni Truth that led them through a meandering route to the border between the Grand Duchy of Tuscany and the Papal States on paths known only to locals and hunters.
Based on historical research and information gathered on site, which has been passed down between generations, we tried to reconstruct as much as possible, the route followed by Don Giovanni Truth to conduct the fugitives, Garibaldi and Light, by Palazzuolo to populate.
The route, without difficulty, except for length, connecting the valley of the River Senio and Lamone that is on dirt roads, mule trails, which are maintained for long stretches in a panoramic position. Also touching or being skim some significant evidence the past, like the church of S. Peter Valnera, the Renaissance town of Gamberaldi, the Villa Gruffieto of 1752, the Abbey of Susinana, where in 1302 he was buried Maghinardo Pagans "lioncel the nest by the white outline part of the summer to the winter" (Inferno, Canto XXVII ) and, of course, Palazzuolo.
