Excursion Sasso Simone

Sasso Simone - Sunday, 1 August 2010
Where are the Stones of Simon and Simoncello? Well you might think that were always there, but not so. It is an ancient mystery. Sasso Simone and said up next "big brother" said Simoncelli: two huge boulders that seem to have been hurled by Polyphemus, once they were deposited into the Tyrrhenian Sea. Then, because the ' orogeny, process of lifting and folding of the earth's crust, they erected the great movements and submarines, they have shifted where they are now. Marine fossils embedded in stone reveal the source of Sasso and his primary membership of the sea.
Well on this huge Sasso Grand Duke Cosimo I de 'Medici did make a bold blueprint for a fortress city an ideal city, the City of the Sun, but it was a failure. In addition to difficulties in the complicated political geography of the time, much of the failure is due to the terrible weather conditions that persisted for many months. I read in a magazine: "The last night of all was surely the most terrible. The storm attacked the Sasso for days without respite. Ravenous wolf pack roamed among abandoned houses, the animals were bolder already penetrated by digging a hole. A strong wind shook the shutters and whistled between the tiles. The guard resisted imprisoned in the tower, weakened from hunger and cold, consuming fire burning in the last pending departure, scheduled for the following day. The year was 1673.
Access: the new ring road of Rimini you reach the entrance of the SP258. Follow the road until the mill of Bascio, here is leaves and turn left onto a narrow road that leads to Sestino: after a few miles, a signpost indicates Barboni House and Sasso di Simone, left. About 600 meters and you reach the small village where there are ; some houses in the process of restructuring. I would add, for many years. Here you can leave your car.

Route: House Barboni (d. 950). There embarks on route 61. The trail white / red CAI is located on a stone in a dry stone wall. Shortly after the trail is also vertical wooden arrow. After a short stretch of dirt road you get into the field, before a slight rise, which then gets steeper now, and soon leads to a ridge with control.
Leave the unit on the left and carry on, keeping on the right, a few clay hills.

This leads to an area that looks "lunar" , where is the junction with route 61 / A (d. 1067) for the Refuge House of the King, is neglected and continue pointing the Sasso di Simone, who is now clearly visible in front of the walker.
You go down a availment where a landslide took place and where they were placed in Plett of wood joined by a rope, perhaps to protect a possible fall of grazing animals. In fact, a little further on there is often a plateau where cows graze.
The path goes always with good views of the Sasso Simone and soon you reach the junction with the route 17 (m. 1098 - 0.30 hours), turn right and walk along a broad diagonal down slightly past large boulders. Then, a steep ascent to reach the ridge, near a large beech and lonely.
He then arrived at the foot of the Sasso and where they are CAI
You go left and After a short climb, you go to trample on the old path that skirts the Sasso and leads to the top.

little further on is the plaque which commemorates the city-fortress by Cosimo I on the CCIM Sasso di Simone. The name probably comes from the Roman priests "Semon" feature that would have to worship the gods of the hills and the tops of the mountains

little further on is a small gate leading into a wooded area and short below

the large cross erected in 1913, recalls the sixteenth anniversary of the Edict of Milan Constantine.

reached the cross (1206 m, at 1.17), is well worth along the circumnavigation of the entire top "very flat" of the Stone, where you can enjoy a beautiful view

on Simoncello and Val Marecchia proppagini and also on the Apennines.

Although most of the great plateau has been colonized by the "elder Lebbia" (Elder ebulus), commonly called false elder, that is to say the truth, when everything is blooming a real show, but some areas have mixed the classic flowering.
